The beloved Fonzie, from the now-ancient show ‘Happy Days’ cussed me out awhile back.
I was minding my own business working on some stuff in my office when a character that I swear was the splitting image of ‘The Fonze’, stuck his head in my door.
Not wanting to appear rude, I invited him to have a seat and I realized I was in for it as soon as he opened his mouth.
A stream of cuss-words that would make any sailor proud began to flow rather quickly.
I see others in the store peeking in, so I tried to shut the door or usher him outside, but this just increased his agitation.
Well, to make a long and excruciating story short, I finally get him to calm down a tad and got to the bottom of his complaint.
Turns out that he had missed lunch in the soup kitchen by an hour and the door was locked.
And because we are a Christian organization it is our responsibility to make him a hot meal right now and to let him go back to the kitchen and eat it.
I gently explained that we do try and feed anyone who is hungry, but we do have to maintain some form of schedule so we can get the place cleaned up and our employees can go home for the day, but this wasn’t a very satisfactory explanation.
I was finally able to make him some chili dogs to go and gave him a food box and sent him on his way.
I haven’t seen him since, but I do hope he is having ‘Happier Days’ 🙂
Our Mission Statement reads…
Without passing judgment, and in a spirit of love and hospitality, The Silver City Gospel Mission feeds, clothes, and provides an oasis of welcome, safety, and cleanliness for the homeless and men, women and children at or below the poverty line seeking survival services in the Silver City area.
We recognize the dignity and spiritual destiny of each person, and hope by our attitude of hospitality and love, to nourish not only the physical needs of those who come to the Gospel Mission, but also their spiritual need for love, acceptance, respect, friendship and salvation.
We will bend over backwards to make sure we meet this goal, but ‘Aaaay’, I guess we just can’t please everyone all the time.
