Our first farmers market for the hungry in Silver City went pretty well. The truck was on time, we had plenty of help, setup was efficient and looked good, the quality of the produce was excellent, and most importantly we fed a lot of hungry folks.
The food ran out just as the last of our line was dwindling down and the very few that didn’t receive any were given the chance to cull from the fruits and veggies that we had quickly put aside as not quite up to par or to drop by the Mission the next day for a food box from our own supply.
We had a few complaints about those that were home-bound not receiving any items and some who arrived at the beginning receiving more than those at the end which we will try and deal with before the next go-round.
This was a trial run and if the funds come through we may be able to do it a few more times next summer.
And thanks to Walmart and a few other stores and Roadrunner Food Bank we were able to get some nutritious, fresh food into the hands of some people who really needed it.
