I get to hear all sorts of interesting stories about the Mission, some of them true and some not quite so factual.
The other day I was having breakfast at the Silver Cafe and I heard a couple of gentlemen saying that ‘Beer drinkers and hell-raisers run the Gospel Mission.’
Now being the one that runs it, I was a little taken-aback at first by this comment and I gently set them straight.
Now it’s true that being a former Marine, I might have drank a little bit of beer and raised my share of Hades in the past, but I’m pretty much a teetotaler any more except for the occasional egg nog at Christmas time.
But I sure can see what could have been my future self in some of these guys if I hadn’t became a Christian and settled my act down a bit. I’m not perfect and I still have my fair share of sins, but drinking isn’t one of them anymore (if you consider that a sin).
What might have started off as just a bit of fun for a lot of the people we see has landed them in the pits of despair and hopelessness. A hole from which there seems to be no way out.
But with Christ, there is always hope and always forgiveness waiting for any who will trust in Him and call on His name for help.
I pretty much had to hit rock-bottom, but Christ saved me from a path of sure destruction and He is saving some of the folks down here also.
We provide services to anyone, no matter what their so-called sin may be and in fact we welcome those who some may consider to be the dregs of society because we believe they are the ones who need our help the most.
We pray for anyone who asks for our help anytime and anywhere, because to be honest, conditions are so bad for some that we see that prayer might be their only chance.
I can see why some might think our place is the home of beer drinkers and hell raisers-we have quite a few rough characters hanging around so there may be a touch of truth to it.
But I sure have learned that you can’t judge a book by its cover and that even for the totally broken, there is still hope.
